THORNCLIFFE-IZAL GATE GUARD

Images of the gate guard at former Thorncliffe Works of Newton, Chambers and Company. Situated in Chapeltown, Northern Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Thorncliffe Iron works was established in 1793 and expanded to mining with the fractional distillation of coal to produce the famous 'IZAL' disinfectant products including that course sandpaper toilet roll! During world War Two, Churchill tanks were produced at this once massive site and up until late 2004 a Churchill tank stood at the entrance to the site. There has been much discussion to the current location of this vehicle, the opinion is that she has gone for scrap?
